Colour
Vogue has a calm “girly” approach to it. The background is Cheryl Cole, who is considered to be a role model to a lot of women and teenagers, and the writing/subheadings are written in white and pink which too, are girly colours.
NME
have a more dark appearance on their cover. The background is black but
the main feature/focal point, is the band/artist being shown, which in
this case is The Killers. The colour of the logo is red and the
headlines and titles are white and yellow, all these colours stand out
on a black background.
Design
Vogue
has the title written in a gold, clear font which is going across the
top of the magazine cover. The subheadings are pushed towards the sides
of the page so the image/celebrity (Cheryl Cole) is the main
feature/focal point shown on the page.
NME
is very different to Vogue, The title is located in the top left of the
magazine, which is also the NME logo. However, like Vogue, the
celebrity is still the main feature/focal point, but the name of the
celebrity/band is at the bottom of the page. Also the subheadings are at
the top and the very bottom of the page, whereas in Vogue, they are at
the sides instead.
Images
On
the cover of Vogue the only image is Cheryl Cole, she is considered to
be a role model to a lot of teenagers and the majority of women want to
look like her or look just as good as her, so by using her as the focal
point of the magazine it will attract more female readers
NME
doesn’t really target a specific audience or gender. As NME is a music
magazine they usually show an image on the front cover of a new or
popular band/artist. This attracts readers as they will be able to find
out about new bands and their backgrounds.
Vogue
encourages woman and teens to look up to people like Cheryl Cole, to
make people want “the look” so by using her as the focal point and
showing information about her look, it will make females to pick it up
to discover how to be like her.
NME
does not really encourage an individual’s appearance, but it can
inspire them as it can show how people became famous due to not giving
up on their talent.
Written Codes
In
the Vogue magazine you can see the title stands out, however as it only
stands out on the white, it may be difficult to read from a distance.
However the NME magazine, has a bright red title standing out on a black
background which makes it easier to see from a distance.
Composition and Framing
The
first thing you notice on the cover of Vogue is Cheryl Cole, the bright
subheadings then make your eyes move across the page to see what the
article is about.
The
NME magazine usually attracts the reader by the artist/band name and an
image of them on the front cover. Once that has drawn you to the front
cover you then see the bold, bright subheadings which then make you read
all the other information or quotes.
Overall Impression
Vogue
does give a good indication of what is inside, it shows the main topic
is Cheryl Cole and her style. Men are not really drawn to this because
obviously they do not have an interest on how to look like Cheryl Cole.
NME
doesn’t seem to have a specific audience, the only people that are
unlikely to buy the magazine are the people who don’t like the artist on
the front cover. Also it does give a good idea of what is inside by
showing at the top what other bands/artists are included in the
magazine.
What I Have Learnt
From this I have learnt that the image is the main focus in any kind of magazine so when it comes to my magazine I need to have a good image that takes up a large part of the page. Also when I design my magazine I will have to do research into the genre music magazine, as each type of magazine has a different style to suit the genre.
